SRA Architects secured the contract to deliver masterplan lead design services for Waimea College in the Tasman Region, responding to the urgent need for expansion due to a growing student population fueled by a wide enrollment catchment area and burgeoning residential developments. Tasked with accommodating an anticipated student body of 2000, we embarked on Stage 1, now successfully concluded, where students are already benefiting from their new learning environments. Notably, Stage 1 boasts an impressive carbon sequestration of over 280 tons. Emphasizing sustainability, we utilized eco-friendly materials such as Sustainable NZ Abodo timber for decking, engaging local manufacturers like Nelson Pine & Potius for the design and fabrication of the exposed timber structures, which highlight both the structural prowess and aesthetic appeal of timber. This initial phase comprises 9 teaching spaces across 2 levels, including a horticulture room with access to a north-facing outdoor garden space designed for student involvement. While Stage 1 adhered to a more traditional classroom layout, the incorporation of acoustically rated operable walls offers adaptability.

Moving forward to Stage 2, our design seamlessly extends the ethos established in Stage 1. Notably, the timber tech structure significantly reduces concrete usage, limited to the ground floor slab and pathways. Timber plays a central role, with structural shear walls and exposed cross braces crafted from this sustainable material. The first floor and ceiling system feature locally constructed Potius box beam sections, contributing to the project's regional economic impact. Other sustainable elements include a warm roof, acoustic batten & cradle floor, and New Zealand-grown Abodo timber decking. Additionally, innovative use of materials is showcased with acoustic wall linings made from recycled plastic bottles, with a combined total of 42,000 2L plastic bottles repurposed across both Stage 1 and Stage 2 buildings, furthering our commitment to environmental stewardship.
