CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

1997

Sheppard & Rout was commissioned to design a new purpose-built School for both Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Canterbury University’s Ilam campus on a restrictive15 metre wide by 100 metre long site.

The five level building houses the various programmes of the School, including offices, computer laboratories, lecture theatres, and associated spaces. While dealing with a challenging site, running between five existing buildings, the School also had to efficiently connect a large number of disparate existing floors, levels, and services.

The concrete structure was designed to be complimentary to its surrounding buildings, including a number of fine examples of Brutalist architecture.  Furthermore, the design decision was made to expose both on the interior and out, the structure, construction, and services in a manner appropriate to its purposed as an engineering school.
